Thanks to all for the lively discussion and suggestions for reading!

Carl, I am actually providing the WMS for the United States on behalf of 
the USGS through my University for OneGeology, so I am *intimately* 
aware of it :-)

My talk at the IGC in Oslo was yesterday, and based on the feedback from 
the list I was able to say that the spec was under consideration, so 
that was very useful.
